Work from home observations
WFH has become very common since Covid 19, but in my 50+ year working life, I only spent 5 years getting up in the morning and driving to the office. The rest of the time I have had an office at home.
This started when I was working for Technion Isca in South Wales. The company was restructuring and I was asked about wha my plans might be. I stated that prospect of moving to Sussex to be with my 'new girl friend' was high on the list. My then boss said I could move there and keep my job. The house had a suitable guest room (Granny room), so I moved down with my then very expensive Intel Development system, and osciloscope and suitable equipment to develop hardware and programming of the same. 46 years later, the arrangement (now wife) is the same.
In those days I did honnest 9-5 days, but also often tempted to carry on after hours and at weekends. There was flexibility to modify the hours a bit, but I think the company always won. If you enjoy the work, you don't count the hours.
The great joy of working at home was very few interuptions. This was a million of years before internet, so only communiations with colleagues was by phone. To send work off this was by posting 8" floppy disks, or EPROMs. For face to face contact, this took place in New York, Dublin of Basingstoke. I did know who I was working with, but one was on one's own.
After 3 years, the company was in effect being closed down, and I was made reduntant. Having a home office, I decided to take the big risk and start working for my self, rather than look for another job. At this time, we had moved house, and I now had a large personal office in the house. I kitted this office out with a work bench I built, and 46 years later I am typing this on the same bench, and office. My wood working skills have not gone out of date as fast as the original PCs did.
